NEWS RELEASE: FALLEN OFFICERS MEMORIAL

The Columbus Police Department will host the Columbus Against Drugs (CAD) Fallen Officers Memorial. The event will be held Thursday, October 20, 2022, at 5:30 p.m. at the Columbus City Services Center located at 3111 Citizens Way. This is an annual event that honors the lives of officers who have fallen in the line of duty.

NEWS RELEASE: ARSON SUSPECT CHARGED WITH MURDER

 Wednesday, October 12, 2022

On March 4, 2022, Columbus Firefighters responded to a house fire in the 1600 block of 14th Ave. After putting out the fire, firefighters discovered the body of a male (later identified as Valburn Almonord) still inside the structure. The fire was believed to be arson and the suspect, Richard Jernigan, Jr., was interviewed by both police and fire investigators. Jernigan was arrested that day and charged with Arson 1st Degree. Almonord’s body was sent for autopsy.

NEWS RELEASE: 4TH ARREST IN MURDER OF LORENZO VASQUEZ-LOPEZ

On October 12, 2021, Columbus Police responded to five (5) armed robberies within 30 minutes of each other, all in the area of the Beallwood Subdivision. Three of the five victims had been shot. One of those victims, Lorenzo Vasquez-Lopez, died as a result of his injuries.

NEWS RELEASE: DOUBLE HOMICIDE INVESTIGATION

 Monday, October 10, 2022

On Sunday, October 10, 2022, around 1319 hours, Police responded to 2617 Hilton Avenue concerning a welfare check. While in route, Police were advised two people were deceased (Ursula Dietz 64 yrs. and Elantra Dietz 18 months) inside the home. EMS arrived on the scene and could not resuscitate either victim. Deputy Coroner Lance Christenson arrived on the scene and pronounced the victims deceased at 1410 hours.

NEWS RELEASE: OFFICER-INVOLVED SHOOTING

 Saturday, October 8, 2022

On Saturday, October 8, 2022 at approximately 1:43 a.m., Columbus Police officers received a call to investigate a domestic dispute at the Circle K (4420 2nd Ave.) near Manchester Expressway. Upon arrival, the officers were notified that the suspect had left the scene. While searching the area, our officers located the suspect in the 4200 block of 3rd Avenue. When officers engaged the suspect, he pulled out a knife and chain.

NEWS RELEASE: 11-YEAR-OLD INJURED IN SHOOTING

 Friday, October 7, 2022

On Friday, October 7, 2022 at approximately 12:30 a.m., our officers were dispatched to the 3000 block of Meade Street in reference to a shooting. Upon arrival, officers found the 11-year-old victim with a gunshot wound to his right arm. The victim was taken to a local hospital for treatment. His injuries are non-life threatening.

On Friday, September 30, 2022 at 5:38 p.m., our officers responded to the 6100 block of Georgetown Drive in reference to a shooting. Upon arrival, officers discovered a black male (later identified as Steven Daniel) lying in a driveway suffering from a gunshot wound.

NEWS RELEASE: ARREST OF DENNIS C. THOMPSON - UPDATE

On September 1, 2022, our investigators were alerted to what appeared to have been the illegal electronic surveillance and recording of people inside a restaurant at The Animal Farm (105 12th Street). The investigation began that day and over the next few weeks, probable cause was developed to issue arrest warrants for Dennis Cleveland Thompson, 37.
