Statement on Baby Found in Dumpster

On September 2, 2025, around 6:30 p.m., a newborn baby boy was discovered in a dumpster behind the Budgetel in the 3100 block of Victory Drive. He was taken to Piedmont Columbus Regional, where he remains in the NICU. Our Special Victims Unit is handling the investigation.

Columbus Police Department Conducts Underage Tobacco/Vape Operation

On Friday, August 29, 2025, the Columbus Police Department’s Special Operations Unit conducted an underage Tobacco/Vape Operation. As a result of the operation, seven individuals were arrested for selling tobacco or vape products to persons under the age of 21.

Columbus Police Department to Host K9 Swearing-In Ceremony

The Columbus Police Department will hold a special ceremony on Monday, August 25, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. in the Community Room of the Public Safety Center (510 10th Street) to officially swear in its four newest K9 officers. This milestone marks the largest K9 Unit in CPD history and the first time the department has had full-service K9s, trained in narcotics detection, explosive detection, tracking, and apprehension.

Macon Road Murder Investigation

On August 19, 2025, around 4:46 p.m., Columbus Police Officers responded to the 3100 block of Macon Road in reference to a person down. Responding officers discovered a Black male (later identified as Edwin Grier, 66) who was unresponsive and bleeding from the head.

Stolen Classic Car Recovered, Two Arrested

The Columbus Police Department’s Property Crimes Unit has recovered a stolen 1973 Nissan Datsun 240SX and arrested two suspects following an investigation that led officers to Marietta. On July 23, 2025, the vehicle was reported stolen from a residence on 17th Avenue. The car held sentimental value to the victim, as it once belonged to his late father.

CPD’s Property Crimes Unit Arrests 19 People in July, Filing 56 Charges

Warm Springs Road Death Investigation

Upon arrival, officers located an unresponsive Black male (later identified as Martavis McKinnie, 28) lying on the ground.

Joint Investigation Leads to Arrest on Drug and Firearm Charges

A months-long joint investigation between the Columbus Police Department’s Special Operations Unit and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) has resulted in the arrest of Joshua Alexander, 34, on multiple drug and firearm-related charges.
