On Wednesday, April 15, 2026, members of the Columbus Police Department’s Special Operations Unit, with assistance from the Georgia State Patrol, concluded a narcotics investigation resulting in the seizure of illegal drugs and the arrest of two individuals.

On Wednesday, April 15, 2026, members of the Columbus Police Department Special Operations Unit, along with the Department of the Army Criminal Investigation Division at Fort Benning, executed a search warrant at BABA Smoke Shop (2111 Manchester Expressway). The search warrant was the result of an investigation initiated after receiving complaints about suspected illegal activity.

The Columbus Police Department’s Fugitive Unit, with assistance from the Special Operations Unit and the United States Marshals Service, conducted targeted operations throughout March 2026, resulting in the arrest of 44 individuals with outstanding warrants.

On Wednesday, April 8, 2026, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., the Columbus Police Department will partner with St. Anne Outreach for a Community Day event.

On April 2, 2026 at 11:50 p.m., Columbus Police Officers were dispatched to the 3400 block of Victory Drive in reference to a shooting. Responding officers discovered a Black male (later identified as Calvin Mitchell, 37) suffering from a gunshot wound. EMS responded to the scene and transported him to Piedmont Columbus Regional where he died from his injuries.
Dwayne Quarles, 50, has been taken into custody in connection to the death of Calvin Mitchell. Quarles is charged with Murder, Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Crime, and Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon. The arrest was a coordinated effort between CPD’s Violent Crimes Unit and SWAT Team.
