C.L.E.A - Citizens Law Enforcement Academy
The Citizens Law Enforcement Academy is jointly operated by the Muscogee County Sheriff's Office and the Columbus Police Department. This is a rare opportunity for private citizens to obtain first-hand knowledge about law enforcement and public safety operations. Instructors from all areas of both departments discuss the "hows" and "whys" of law enforcement. During the academy, students are exposed to a variety of topics in an assortment of settings. Emphasis is placed on "hands-on" subject matter to give everyone a more in-depth understanding of law enforcement. Subjects presented include the following:

- Crime Scene Investigation
- Traffic Accident Investigation
- Juvenile Operations and Gang Task Force
- Sex Crimes
- Firearm Familiarization
- Criminal Investigations
- Radar Operation
- Child Abuse
- And Much More!
Students will also be offered the opportunity to ride along with on-duty Sheriff's Deputies or Police Officers during normal patrol operations.
The goal of the Academy is to enhance the relationship between private citizens and the law enforcement community. This will provide the citizens with a better understanding of law enforcement to dispel suspicions and misconceptions and to increase police/community rapport. By the same token, law enforcement becomes more aware of the feelings and concerns of the community. All this helps to establish open lines of communication and cooperation.
Classes are held twice a year, in January and July. The Academy is 14 weeks long, including 12 weeks of instruction plus orientation and graduation. Classes begin at 6:00 P.M each Thursday of the class term. Most classes are held in the training facilities of the Columbus Police Department, 510 10th St. In addition, some classes meet at other areas including the Muscogee County Jail and the SWAT training facility.
The Citizens Law Enforcement Academy is free to all participants. You must be 21 years old or older to apply. Preference is given to Muscogee County residents and those who work in Muscogee County; however, substantial numbers of others have been accepted. Participants will be screened for suitability. Persons with a known criminal history will not be considered. Also, persons with an extensive driving record will be examined to determine if their reasons for wanting to attend conform to the goals of the academy. A "printable" copy of the CLEA application is also available. A copy of some form of an official photo ID should be included to facilitate a background check. The Muscogee County Sheriff's Office has partnered with the United States Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) in their National Drug Take Back Initiative. This joint operation, held 4 times per year, is designed to recover as much unused, unwanted and expired prescription or over the counter medication as possible with-in Muscogee County. Each year, the Muscogee County Sheriff's Office participates in the Annual CWA/Georgia Sheriff's Golf Tournament. All proceeds go to the Georgia Sheriff's Youth Homes, Inc.
The Georgia Sheriff's Youth Homes is a childcare agency sponsored by the Georgia Sheriff's Association. The Youth Homes provide full-time residential care for up to 130 of Georgia's dependent, abused, abandoned, and neglected children. Founded in 1959, it now serves hundreds of children across six campuses, located in Columbus, Hahira, Dalton, LaGrange, Nunez, and Austell, Georgia.
The purpose of Youth Homes is to provide a secure future for Georgia's needy and worthy children, and give them love, guidance, discipline and all the advantages that are every American child's birthright. It is the mission of the Georgia Sheriff's Youth Homes to continue to provide the best possible care for the dependent, neglected, abandoned and abused children of Georgia. Hispanic Outreach Program / Latinos en Columbus - Lt. Tammy Foster/Doss
As a response to the growing Hispanic population in Columbus, the MCSO takes part in the Columbus Consolidated Government Outreach Program. We have a number of Spanish speaking officers available to come speak to your group. We also have materials translated into Spanish to better describe the different courts in the Court System of Muscogee County. The Muscogee County Sheriff's Office Operations Bureau, under the direction of the Sheriff and Chief Deputy, is resourced with a state of the art Mobile Command Unit and Mobile personnel Unit. The Mobile Command Unit is equipped with the latest satellite communications capability to include inter-operating most any type communication used by various public safety agencies nationally. The Mobile Command Unit is staffed by a highly trained strike team of ten personnel who are ready for deployment at a moments notice. The Mobile Command Unit's call sign is the “Guardian” and has been planned and designed to sustain business continuity in the event our infrastructure is ever compromised especially regarding the operations of the Muscogee County Jail that houses over an average of 1,000 inmates on a daily basis. S.A.L.T. is a program offered by the Sheriff's Office designed specifically for senior citizens to address concerns, generate an awareness and to provide information about law enforcement trends, new/changes in laws, elder abuse, and scams/crimes that victimize seniors. This program meets once a month with guest speakers from the community presenting topics of particular interest that are chosen by both the seniors and Officers.
